Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the cost of private lesson?
A. Please call us at 781.337.8500 or contact us through our online formfor current pricing and availability.
Q. What ages are recommended for private lesson?
A. Lessons are open to both child and adult students. Children ages 4 and 5 are eligible for our Early Childhood Music experience class, while children, teens and adults who are upward of those ages are eligible for regular private lessons.
Q. What instrument should I begin my child on, if he/she has never played?
A. Since all kids have different interests and abilities, we recommend coming to visit us at BSM, so we can give you and your child a tour and introduce them to a few instruments. Once the dialogue is going, it will be easier to pinpoint their interests and help you choose an instrument.
Q.Do I need to have an instrument, or can I rent one?
A. We rent woodwinds, horns, violins and violas. All other instruments need to be purchased by students independently.
Q. Half hour vs. hour long private lessons, how do I decide?
A. For students ages 11 and up we usually recommend a one hour private weekly lesson, to ensure the best results. For younger students and beginners, a half hour lesson is more common. Of course, there are exceptions to every circumstance, we're happy to discuss your goals with you in person to help you decide.
Q. What are my teacher's qualifications?
A. All private instructors at BSM have a minimum of a B.A. Degree in Music, ample teaching and professional performance experience to ensure the quality of your lesson content and undergo thorough background checks to ensure safety and security.
Q. How can I find the right teacher?
A. All of the instructors here at BSM are warm and talented professionals, whom we are proud to recommend. However, if you or your child has specific learning needs, or unique personality traits, our client coordinators can recommend a good match for you, based on those factors.
Q. When do ensembles meet?
A.. Ensembles (live group playing) meet in our BOSSELIVE program, weekly for an hour for eight weeks. Ensembles are available all year long, breaking for 2 weeks in between each session. To see when the next session begins, visit our BOSSELIVE website at www.bosselive.com
Q. Who can join an ensemble?
A.. Ensembles are student groups that are open to the BSM student body. They are organized by age and musical genre. The schedule and enrollment information is emailed to all private lesson students every session (every 8 weeks), and if a student is interested, they simply need approval from their private teacher, so just ask! Students who are not enrolled in lessons at BSM may also join, after scheduling/completing a simple and complimentary evaluation with one of our directors.
Q. When an Ensemble group records in the studio, how long before their recordings are ready?
A. 14 - 21 business days, all materials are held at our offices for in-person pickup. Recordings are not mailed out.
Q. When/where are BSM Summer programs and who can join?
A. Our fun and educational musical camps and workshops begin right after July 4th, and continue until Labor Day weekend. Participants may choose from full day programs or shorter workshops. Non-BSM students are welcome, pending a complimentary evaluation with our director.
Q. When is the registration and payment deadline for summer programs?
A. The preliminary registration deadline is May 30th, at which time a 50% deposit is due to reserve your spot. The remainder of the tuition is due on or before June 30th. If there are programs with open spots after the deadline, we will gladly accept late entries (payment in full required for late entries).
